Evidence Base for the Standard
Why is the Standard Research-Based?
- The UNWTO Best Tourism Villages initiative (2021–2025) gathered 319 villages from 65 countries through 1,000+ applications - our standard follows the same 9 evaluation areas.
- EU Smart Tourism (DG MOVE, 2025) defines 4 pillars: accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity - Turin and Benidorm are leading examples.
- ISO 21401:2018/Amd 1:2024 sets 18 requirements (8 environmental, 7 social, 3 economic) for sustainable accommodation - our standard is aligned.
- EU Tourism Transition Pathway (2022) defines 27 priority actions for green and digital tourism transition - our standard reflects these.
- Balkan Tourism Awards (2025, Belgrade) recognize excellence of municipalities and hotels in the Balkans - our standard encourages regional networking.
- According to the EU Tourism Dashboard, tourism accounts for ~10% of EU GDP, with 3+ million SMEs and 20 million jobs - our standard contributes to this ecosystem.
