The Old Wooden Mosque in Bužim is one of the largest wooden mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and probably in the Balkans. It measures 14 × 18 meters, with a porch of 2.5 × 18 m, with a capacity of about 100 worshippers. It was built exclusively from oak planks, and according to the oldest residents of Bužim, not a single nail or any piece of metal was used in its construction - everything was made of wood. Together with the nearby fortress and the old mosque, it is a protected national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

History

The exact date of construction of the Old Wooden Mosque in Bužim is unknown, but it is believed to have been built in the early 19th century. An inscription plaque on the mosque porch states it was renovated in 1835, while the Vakufnama (endowment deed) about the renovation, kept inside, records that the mosque and the fountain in its immediate vicinity were renovated by the Bosnian vali Mehmed Salih Vedžihi-pasha in 1838 - meaning the mosque was built before 1835.

The building has a rectangular floor plan with external dimensions of 14 × 18 m, with a porch of 2.5 × 18 m. The size of the building, its interior light and height required horizontal and vertical articulation. The layout is achieved with four horizontal rows of load-bearing wooden pillars with saddles, carrying wooden beams placed parallel to the mihrab wall. Light enters through 18 double-leaf windows with plain glass, without external mashrabiya or internal shutters.
