The Royal Town of Bužim

Old Town Bužim, also known as Bužim Fortress, is the largest medieval fortress in Bosanska Krajina after Bihać. In ancient times it was called a "town" because it was better and different - it had more towers than others, it was a royal town. It preserved Glagolitic written heritage, and King Louis allowed mining of gold, silver and copper on its lands. It also possessed a vast treasury of valuables that was plundered and scattered across the world over centuries. Built at 325 meters above sea level, perched on a hill above the modern town, it dominates the landscape and bears witness to the turbulent past of this region.

History of Bužim Fortress

The Bužim fortress appears in historical sources under two names: Čava and Bužim. Although Bužim is one of the largest and most significant medieval fortresses in Bosanska Krajina, there is no reliable data about its origins. Based on construction style, it was built in the 14th century, from which period there is somewhat more documented information.

Architecture and Construction Features

The fortress consists of an inner and outer fortification. The entire complex covers an area of 7,267 m². The inner, older fortification represents a smaller castle with a relatively regular quadrilateral base and high circular towers at the corners. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was surrounded by a new fortification with a trapezoid base, with polygonal towers at its corners.
