In the heart of Bosanska Krajina, in the municipality of Bužim, hides a natural gem of which there are only about thirty in the entire world - Svetinja Spring, also known as Ibret Spring. This is a place where nature performs a unique show: water suddenly appears, creates a waterfall, then just as suddenly disappears.

Geological Rarity

Svetinja is an intermittent spring - a spring that periodically dries up and reappears. Located in the Čava area, near Dobro Selo, about 5 kilometers from the regional road R-401 connecting Bosanska Krupa and Bužim.

What makes Svetinja unique is the waterfall that forms when water gushes from a limestone cliff. The source sits above a rock ledge about 16 meters high. Water cascades down the rock, forming a beautiful waterfall, and after some time dries up again. This cycle repeats several times daily.

Legends and Beliefs

Local tradition holds this spring sacred. Every year on May 6, on St. George’s Day, people gather near the spring, washing and bathing in its water, believing in its healing properties.

One of the most famous legends tells of a girl who regained her sight at this spring. According to tradition, caravans often passed by this spring in the past, and travelers would stop to rest and drink the water, believing it brought good luck.

How to Get There

Svetinja is located about 5 km from the main road. The best approach is by car to the village of Varoška Rijeka, then on foot to the spring itself. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended. The most impressive sight is when the waterfall is actively flowing - the best time to visit is after rainy periods.
